New Orleans' Rebirth
There’s never been a better time to be a student in New Orleans than now. The city’s rebirth offers you more opportunity to learn outside of the classroom than ever before. Many Tulane students are at the front line of New Orleans’ growth and development, having a multitude of options when it comes to being involved in the comeback of one of America’s most unique cities.
Many Tulanians are involved in C.A.C.T.U.S., the Community Action Council of Tulane University Students. Through this umbrella organization, our students log thousands of community service hours in the Greater New Orleans area each year. Others can be found volunteering at the Musician's Village, a Habitat for Humanity project dedicated to providing local artists with new homes.
All of our students participate in some form of service learning while they are at Tulane. The idea behind this part of our core curriculum is “learning by doing.” It’s an amazing opportunity to take what you learn in the classroom and to apply it to service projects in the community. For instance, our School of Architecture’s UrbanBuild program allows students to work on a house from the design phase to the completed building.
While students dedicate a lot of time to community service, they do not miss opportunities to enjoy the wonderful city they are living. Katrina did not dampen New Orleanians' spirits, which is easily seen through the many festivals and activities the city offers. Most students will tell you one of their favorite pastimes is exploring and enjoying the city.
