The Newcomb dance program offers Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) degrees in dance performance, as well as a minor; all Tulane students, regardless of major, are welcome to take dance classes as well. Technique courses for the major focus on ballet and modern dance, with optional courses available in jazz, tap, hip-hop, African, and Brazilian dance. Majors also take courses in dance composition, dance history, and movement and performance theory. Majors and non-majors alike can audition for the Newcomb Dance Company, which performs mostly modern choreography by our faculty or guest artists once per semester. Students present their own choreography at an end-of-semester Young Performers Concert. In addition to hosting renowned guest artists like Gary Gordon and Acty Tang, Alberto del Saz, and Jim Lapour, the department organizes frequent trips to perform and study around the country and abroad. Recent destinations have included the Nikolais Centennial, the American College Dance Festival, Russia, Brazil, South Africa, and Finland.
An audition is required to enter the B.F.A., B.A., or minor in dance; however, this audition takes place after a student has already enrolled at Tulane. Auditions are not required during the process of applying to Tulane; however, applicants with a dance background are welcome to share samples of their work.
