History courses at Tulane cover a broad variety of fields and chronological periods. As befits the university’s location in Louisiana, Tulane’s Department of History has traditionally enjoyed great strength in the history of the Southern United States and Latin America. Within the department is a strong contingent of European historians, who teach courses ranging from the history of the ancient world to those that cover the breaking developments in contemporary history. In recent years, the department has expanded its geographic focus to include faculty specializing in African history, the Islamic world, East Asian history, and Southeast Asia. Members of the department offer an array of courses dealing with women and gender, race, and religious history. Students also have the option to concentrate their studies on the Atlantic World and the Mediterranean World.
