Anthropology

The Department of Anthropology at Tulane researches and offers instruction in all four of the major branches of anthropology: cultural anthropology, archaeology, linguistics, and physical anthropology. Some of the specialties with which we are concerned, and which you will find in our course offerings, include the study of human origins and evolution through fossils, the study of the behavior of our nonhuman primates, the study of prehistoric disease and trauma, the study of American cultures and civilizations in the centuries before Columbus, the indigenous use of plants in the Amazon region of South America, the study of African languages and cultures, the comparison of religions in different parts of the world, and the study of the traditions of ethnic minorities in the People’s Republic of China.
