The Newcomb Department of Music offers a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Music; Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A) degrees in Jazz Studies, Music Composition, Music Performance, and Musical Theatre; a minor in Music Science and Technology; and an interdisciplinary coordinate major in Musical Cultures of the Gulf South.
The B.A. in Music focuses on theory and musicology, with electives available in all the fields listed above. Numerous ensembles are open to all the university’s students by audition, including a symphony orchestra, a marching band, a concert band, a jazz orchestra, a jazz big band, three choirs, musical theatre, and several smaller jazz and chamber groups. All students, regardless of major, are welcome to take music courses and small group or private lessons in an instrument, composition, or voice.
Auditions are not required during the process of applying to Tulane; however, applicants with a music background are welcome to share examples of their work. Click here for more information about auditioning.
