Fun fact: the world’s best ice cream is in New Orleans… It’s called Creole Creamery and their king cake flavor is better than actual king cake.
I love listening to WWOZ, a beloved local Jazz radio station in New Orleans. One of their DJs, DJ Soul Sister (Melissa Weber) has a great hour, and even better live shows, too. When I found out she was made the Hogan Jazz Archivist at Tulane last year, I was so pumped. Only at Tulane, does a DJ who throws the best shows in the city, work as the Jazz Archivist by day.
At the beginning of COVID-19, I went on a walk, feeling pretty down on the whole — you know, pandemic situation. The streets were empty, barely any cars… except for two folks in the neighborhood out playing music in their front yard. As soon as I heard them sing, “an old creole tune that fills the air,” I felt instantly better about everything going on. Only in New Orleans, could a walk around the neighborhood make you feel THAT much better.
Talk to current students! Reach out to friend’s of friends, cousin’s friends, friend’s cousins — you name it. I didn’t tour the school I went to, but I learned so much from talking to students there at the time. If you don’t know anyone from Tulane, reach out to current students.
