Portuguese is a coordinate major that must be paired with a separate primary major (for example, Latin American Studies, Public Health, etc.). The Department of Spanish and Portuguese is dedicated to the study of languages, literatures, and cultures of Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula. Portuguese is estimated to be the seventh most widely spoken language, with millions of speakers in Brazil, Africa, and Portugal. Portuguese classes are particularly unique, as they typically offer even more intimate and individualized language-learning experiences. Learning in that type of environment provides students with a competitive edge, which is especially beneficial for those students who are interested in pursuing international careers.
Our department’s programs range from the most elementary instruction in Portuguese to advanced seminars in literature, culture, and linguistics. Semester or summer abroad programs in Latin America offer rich opportunities for students to greatly improve their language skills while experiencing alternative cultures.
