Africana Studies

Students who elect to major or minor in Africana Studies are required to take an introductory course in the program (AFRS 2000 Introduction to Africana Studies). Most of the other courses that students take to fulfill the curricular requirements are electives offered through a variety of departments on campus, allowing students to sample a range of disciplinary perspectives. Some students in this program choose to double major in a second discipline such as English or History, while others enhance their learning opportunities by participating in Study Abroad programs and internship studies.

Research topics include African Cinema; Afro-Diasporic (including New Orleans) Music and Culture; Black Adolescent Psychology; African Colonial/Postcolonial Culture and Identity; History of Slavery; Caribbean Culture; Music and Culture of Brazil; African-American Literature and Culture; Healthcare in Southern Africa; and Sociology of African-American Religion.
