What do pirate ships, movie theaters, cotton candy, and the opera have to do with each other? Far from a random assortment of items, each of these things has played a significant role in New Orleans history.

The history of New Orleans has shaped, and been shaped, by numerous ideas, inventions, and events. Sometimes purposely and at other times through pure happenstance, the impact of these ideas, inventions, and events have had long-lasting influences on New Orleans and the country as a whole. While you’re unlikely to see pirate ships anymore, New Orleans owes a debt of gratitude to the pirates that once helped defend our shores. And our culture would certainly not be the same without movie theaters, cotton candy, and opera.
