Throw Me Something

For most people, it’s not obvious what a glittered shoe, coconut, or moon pie have in common. But, then again, Tulane students and their fellow New Orleanians are not most people.

Each year in the spring, we take a break to celebrate carnival season with gusto and, anyone who has been to Mardi Gras, can agree that it’s unlike anything else. While Mardi Gras is so much more than parades, the culmination of the season is celebrated with dozens of parades all over the city. These represent different “krewes” of people who network, do philanthropy, and gather one day a year to throw beads and more from floats. The more includes anything from glittered shoes, to coconuts, to moon pies.

While king cakes are not thrown, they are often brought to the parade route by spectators to be enjoyed as the floats roll by. Want to know more about the quirky throws? Click on the images to read about their backstory.
